How to find a therapist

Searching for a therapist can feel like a daunting first step, especially when you’re not sure where to begin. As a therapist practicing in Denver, I often talk with new Clients who felt overwhelmed by the process of finding the right fit. Two of the most widely used directories are Psychology Today and Therapy Den and each provide different types of information you can use to find the right fit.

Psychology Today is probably the most well-known therapist directory, and most therapists in private practice maintain a profile here. You can search for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC), Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT), and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) by zip code, insurance, and specialty. You can also see what other therapists are saying about their colleagues through the endorsement feature.

Therapy Den is a newer directory that focuses on social justice, inclusivity, and matching clients with therapists who align with their values. It's not as well known as Psychology Today, but it’s a growing resource therapists are using it to reach clients who want to know more about the personal beliefs of their therapist. With Therapy Den you can search for therapists by cultural identity, spiritual orientation, political values, and whether they work with specific communities (e.g., LGBTQ+, BIPOC, neurodivergent). I believe it’s important for clients work with someone who understands systemic oppression, gender diversity, and spiritual nuance, so this is an informative resources for clients who want to know their therapist a little more deeply before sitting down in their office.
